White Lines, Blow Away 01.08.2004 - 6:11 p.m. Earlier this week, Seattle had a "snowstorm". 3", tops. Pish posh. But still, people freaked. One of the local newspaper's website had a board running the day of where you could write in comments about the snow in your neighborhood. Me and the guy in the cube across from me, being the only ones to trudge to work, did nothing all day but post phoney comments. Below are all the comments - see if you can spot ours (should be like finding an elephant in a closet. But you'd be surprised to find that many of the crazy ones aren't us.) I warn ya, it's pretty lenghty, so I'm posting this in lieu of having to write for a while. Pick through it when ou have a day or two to kill. **** Snow, snow! I've seen it. Easy to spot, when held back to 35 on a dry freeway. Posted by: ck little at January 6, 2004 06:24 AM Snow is lightly falling in Kirkland by the water. It started around 05:30. About 1/3" accumulation. Drive safely everyone! Posted by: kala at January 6, 2004 07:05 AM Whassup yo!!! it's snowing in bothell!!! Posted by: brittany at January 6, 2004 07:11 AM Here in Evanston, IL, we got six inches of snow Sunday afternoon-evening. The arterials were plowed, salted and clear by Monday morning. There's 4-5" still on the ground. The temperature is right around zero, with a forecast high of 17. It's supposed to be sub-freezing through Saturday. For someone who grew up in Seattle, that's darn cold. Brrr! Posted by: DawgDays at January 6, 2004 08:56 AM About 2 inches here on the UW campus, still coming down. Not very many students coming into class, even though we're still officially open and running on a regular schedule. I'm expecting to see snowball fights in the quad before long. Posted by: ian at January 6, 2004 09:04 AM In north Ballard, we can still see the tips of grass in yards, but it's accumulating regularly. Snow is falling steadily, but the flakes are fine and small. Posted by: Stephen at January 6, 2004 09:23 AM Hey Humanoids!! Quit driving so close to the rear end of the car in front of you. Posted by: Bobby The Brain at January 6, 2004 09:31 AM It's a winter wonderland in Wallingford, at 45th & Interlake. Everytime I look out the window, it seems the snowfall gets heavier and heavier. Posted by: Ara at January 6, 2004 09:32 AM North Ballard is changing as I write - 9:35 a.m., and the snow is much heavier, accumulation faster. Loving it! Posted by: Stephen at January 6, 2004 09:35 AM There is hella snow in Seattle. I had a hell sad bus ride on the way here cuz there were buses all over the U-district. IT snowd. I wish I were in better cloths. I think there is a inch when i woke up. more inces to come. i am downtown. there are stalled buses all over. i am hella hungry. Posted by: Emiglio at January 6, 2004 09:35 AM lovely out here in wayout-west seattle! i see nothing but whiteness ... snow covers all streets, ground, roofs. still powdery sugar coming down, very fine 'n' dusty. there are absolutely no cars out (Belvidere / Admiral), even the west seattle bridge is empty. nice that everyone is in the spirit and taking a SNOWDAY ... these are such a rare treat here. bonus holiday! yehyeh! Posted by: mr. e. at January 6, 2004 09:36 AM I am from the Midwest. You guys don't know what real snow is! You Northwesteners are the biggest fattest wusses. I am from the Midwest. Posted by: Pat at January 6, 2004 09:40 AM nice. you type like you're from Bora Bora, pallie. midwest, northwest, whatever... ENJOY THE SNOWDAY. EVERYONE!! Posted by: at January 6, 2004 09:44 AM Memo to KIRO: We need more coverage of snow story! I want KIRO people at every street, in every home. I want all-snow, all-the-time coverage. Particuarly, get an update, ASAP, of the KIRO promo ads telling us how KIRO covered the snow story best, and showing Raible and gang to be totally on this story. Posted by: William Tabeshaw at January 6, 2004 09:45 AM Yo Pat from the Midwest! I lived in Indiana for 2 years and grew up back East, so I DO know snow. You don't have mountains, glaciers, etc., so it's obvious that you flatlanders don't really know snow like you think you do. Travel a bit more before you make absurd comments! Posted by: Snowman at January 6, 2004 09:49 AM It's snowing so badly here I can barely see the house across the street. It just has to be George Bush's fault. Just wait until Howard Dean is elected President. It will be nothing but sunny, blue skies in Hooterville! Posted by: Stephen Gerbic at January 6, 2004 09:59 AM Snowing lightly here in Wedgewood. About 3" accumulation on my deck, none on the hot tub. Kitties are inside. Bring it on! Posted by: Bob Rooks at January 6, 2004 09:59 AM This Midwesterner says, "Go out and enjoy it before it all melts!" What fun! I'm so jealous... Posted by: Brad at January 6, 2004 10:00 AM How in the world am I going to get to Promise Keepers tonight at Safeco Field? Appreciate any advice from other men in these straits. Posted by: Fran Sappiensa at January 6, 2004 10:04 AM The question is, where in Western Washington is it NOT snowing. I live on 5029 11th Ave NE and we had plenty of snow. It's still a comin' too. I woke up at 4:39 am this morning and it was not snowing. then i woke up again at 7:00 this morning and it was snowing. i had eggs for breakfast and took a bus to work. the busses are very slow and the floors are very wet. so beware. i wore my snowboots and my coworker scot laughted at me, but i am going to thorw a snowball at him later. Posted by: Brian at January 6, 2004 10:06 AM Hey Midwestern Humanoids!! Posted by: David at January 6, 2004 10:11 AM Hi, long time reader, first time poster. I'm downtown and it's a complete whiteout. You can't even see Bainbridge Island, that's how bad it is. Reading through here, it seems the thing is to describe the snow: Downtown, the flakes are light and airy, and playfully dance upon your face as they gracefully fall from the heavens. Like inviting cotton balls falling from god's medicine cabinet. Earlier though, I found two exactly alike. So did I do this right? Posted by: Gordon Gartrail at January 6, 2004 10:13 AM i am more than six inches Posted by: Denny at January 6, 2004 10:16 AM I be from Midwest and I appreciate corn. When snown, Sir Corn not complaint. Try it out some time Mr. Seeattle for your size. Ha! Posted by: Tad Haythornthe at January 6, 2004 10:17 AM Getting off of Aurora and down to Western in downtown Seattle is slippery, even with anti-lock breaks and four-wheel drive. The usual Millionaire's Club guys are on their corner though--and they're helping. Some are directing traffic on Western, getting cars to stop for downhill sliders. Others are shouting warnings to drivers to not go down the slick hill. They deserve some recognition. Posted by: Brenda at January 6, 2004 10:20 AM The snow downtown is light and fluffy. I'm going outside to spin around with my arms spread wide and my face to the heavens. Tiny snowflakes dance on my eyelashes and melt on my skin. I'm a fairy in the winter...I'm a pixie in the snow. Oh, glorious day! Posted by: Amy Benson at January 6, 2004 10:22 AM It's still snowing hard in Laurelhurst (near the UW). The flakes are bigger now, and it's between 2-3" on the ground. Couldn't be prettier! It's like a Navajo sand painting, though. Enjoy it now because it'll be gone soon. Posted by: Kate at January 6, 2004 10:22 AM KIRO is providing really excellent coverage of the snow. I urge everyone to watch KIRO. KIRO is by far the best station in Seattle. No wonder Dan Rather speaks highly of them. Posted by: Terrie Zarnoweghe at January 6, 2004 10:28 AM Boren and Seneca(First Hill)Very heavy snow. maybe 2 1/2 ins. I love it. I'm retired. Posted by: David C. Sessoms Sr. at January 6, 2004 10:28 AM You people are crazy. Yes, it snowed, but the sun is out and it's all melted already here on Cap Hill. Enjoy it while you can. Posted by: Tim at January 6, 2004 10:30 AM About 6-8" in Bremerton, coming down hard with no end in sight. Got food, coffee, and Irish Cream and a full cord of wood. No complaints. Posted by: Steve at January 6, 2004 10:31 AM Started snowing in Mt Vernon when I left for work this morning around 6:40. I commute to Lynnwood, got as far as mile marker 215 (south bound). Snow got heavier and roads got icier, so I turned around and came back home to Mt Vernon. We currently have about 4 inches of snow. Looks beautiful as I sit in the warm house cuddled up with the cat. Posted by: at January 6, 2004 10:43 AM I have 2-3 inches of snow in Lake Forest Park. I hate all local and national tv "news". Read the paper for news. Posted by: at January 6, 2004 10:46 AM It's bad here in Fremont. I mean Donner Party bad, not Michael Jackson bad. I just saw my neighbor cut open his dog and put his baby inside for warmth. I think there will be mob rule soon. Posted by: Ricky at January 6, 2004 10:48 AM I am a 44 year old divorced black male. I have not seen snow come down like this since I was 37. Hall at January 6, 2004 11:02 AM i have a puppy. he is a pug. i took him out in the snow this morning. it was so cute trying to watch him poop in the snow. his little doggy buns were so cold!!! he was a little confused at first. i mean, he has never been in snow before. it was so silly to see him shiver when he dodo'd. i live in ballard and i heart< pugs. Posted by: Brad B at January 6, 2004 12:11 PM I have been in prison for the last 15 years. Just got released a few weeks ago before the holidays. Posted by: UWMC OR at January 6, 2004 01:25 PM I'm at work in Downtown Seattle and worked out at the gym this morning and in downtown gym at lunchtime. Most places are open today so if you don't work today, you've got to use vacation time to get paid. I never ever have missed work because of snow in my lifetime! Vacation time is supposed to be used to enjoy a vacation not because people are such wimps! Posted by: val at January 6, 2004 01:45 PM Snow is faintly falling again in West Seattle, Delridge side. Kids falling down, making snowman, throwing snowballs, touching each other, cackling in anarchic glee. Four inches of snow on my frozen water bowl on the balcony. Cats highly suspicious--sniff the air, but refuse to go out. Posted by: Kerry in West Seattle at January 6, 2004 01:47 PM i am in downtown seattle right now. I saw a cop snowball fight a little over a half an hour ago. They were ruthless, hitting pedestians. I even saw this hotshot cop peg some guy waling on a cane. anyway, i was in my work shoes so when i tried to throw a snowball i slipped and fell on my ass. the snow is not very good for making snowballs. the snow is letting up - yet all the businesses are starting to close. Posted by: Brian O at January 6, 2004 01:49 PM All you people ned to stop whining. If everyone was super careful, and drove catiously they would never learn there lesson. Grow up a little bit and start acting like a kid!!!!!! Go snow!!! Posted by: Tim at January 6, 2004 02:02 PM This place is horrible. I figure that any minute all of western washington will be declared a natural disaster, and will be shut down. And i agree Tim, it is not the "SUV drivers", It is all the stupid people trying to drive in the snow. Stay home if you dont know what you are doing. I wish it would start snowing like this in Nov. and wouldnt quit until feb. Yeehaw!!! Posted by: john at January 6, 2004 02:08 PM I am a SUV hater, hater of SUV. No one needs SUV when you got Metro that take you anyhere. Live long time METRO!!! People are to brave when the drive with SUV. I saw some jackass driving a SUV, drinking a latte and talking on his cell phone. I would have liked to see him get in a crash with another SUV, but not die. Posted by: Andre at January 6, 2004 02:18 PM Parents - Watch what your kids are doing, especially teenagers. There were lots of kids in my neighborhood (Bellevue) sliding on the roads. Even saw teenagers snowboarding behind an SUV. Somebody's son or daughter is going to die today...just a matter of time. Posted by: Buud at January 6, 2004 02:23 PM I drove my 1990 Ford Probe from Bellevue to Redmond (5 miles) to work. 2 hours later I ditched the Probe in the parking garage at work and caught a ride home from a guy who has a car that's meant for this kind of weather. Then I took a nap with my cat. Great day!! Posted by: schmendrick at January 6, 2004 02:35 PM TO THE TAXI CAB DRIVER ON CAPITAL HILL - That white stuff out there is called snow. It is slippery. When you are trying to drive up a hill, it is not a good idea to stop in the middle of it. It is an even worse idea to stop again on the hill after 6 people just managed to get you going again. STAY OFF THE ROAD Posted by: Kirk at January 6, 2004 02:58 PM It's still snowing here in Bremerton. The sailors down the street tried to take their Camaro out for a drive. Bad idea. We live on a big hill. You can picture the rest. Posted by: Michael at January 6, 2004 03:23 PM Someone please give a detailed instruction on how to drive on snow and ice. All I know are: Keep a good distance from the car you are following. Do not slam on your brakes, your car will spin, whether you have a 4WD, ABS, or not. What is good MPH on the freeway like in today's condition? Do studded snow tires help you from getting into spin outs? Posted by: gunnar at January 6, 2004 03:27 PM I am not sure if the Promise Keppers thing is going on tonight or not. Even if it is, I know a lot of men will not be able to attend. Brothers, if you cannot attend... be there in spirit. We will find other ways tonight to bond with each other. Promise Keepers unite! Be careful brothers! Posted by: Pete Penick at January 6, 2004 03:28 PM I planned to stay in all day because of the treacherous roads, but I was out of smokes. Thank God for front-wheel drive cars and Indians. Posted by: Tom at January 6, 2004 03:29 PM i rode bus #71 this morning and it was running late but it still got where it was going even though it had to go another way. i usually take a #73. lucky I didn't cuz it got stuck and people were stuck for over an hour. in 1996 i played video games the whole time cuz I didn't have a job. now i work and got me a real good job. it hasn't been very busy today so you people should come by. Posted by: RANDY! at January 6, 2004 03:51 PM Thank you for the driving tips, "Former Michigander". I wish that all the idiots here knew them. My lady is pregnant and I fear I may have to drive to the hospital tonight. Do you have any suggestions on home pregnancy tactics, in case my car gets stuck in the snow? Posted by: gunnar at January 6, 2004 03:57 PM If you need to learn how to drive in the snow do what brother and I used to do, borrow your parent's car, go to the nearest empty parking lot and do donuts and peal out. I have lived in Seattle my whole life (31 years) and even I can handle 5 inches of snow. Good God, deal with it folks or please stay home. Blizzard 2004, give me a break. The only thing more annoying than listening to people freak out about this meager snow fall, is listening to the news coverage. Local TV is a joke. If you can't handle the snow stay home, it will all be melted tomorrow!! If George Bush is reelected he can keep global warming going, and maybe we will never have to face another day like today again. Posted by: P.K. at January 6, 2004 04:03 PM shut the f*ck up about president bush. he is a good president and a much better human being than you are, you f*cking prick !!!! Posted by: the surgeoness at January 6, 2004 04:12 PM A previous post suggested that drivers practice driving in the snow by going to "the nearest empty parking lot and do donuts and peal (sic) out." Please be aware that this practice is dangerous and illegal. If the police observe this activity, you may receive a ticket. (I believe the infraction is called "losing traction".) Whether or not this activity is illegal, you are endangering yourself and the public. Please be responsible. Posted by: Richard Anderson at January 6, 2004 04:14 PM If President Bush is such a good president, the surgeoness. How come he is not here helping out us washingtonions during Winter Storm 2004. He is a very selfish president. He is probably shooting quail, while we are having a national disaster. I hope you slip on some ice, the surgeoness. Posted by: Tim Moon at January 6, 2004 04:22 PM it is good that you are all being extra catious in the snow... but there is another kind of snow you should be careful of. I am talking about the snow that goes in your nose... yes that kind of snow. snow had become quite widespread in western washington in the last couple of years... and it's use is continuing to grow... especially among young adults. i nearly o'd last summer from to much snow. i will never touch the stuff again. i can't even go outside today...because my will is weak.
